Nov. 30, 2012 – U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced on November 30 that a multi-partner team led by Argonne National Laboratory was awarded $120M over five years to establish an Energy Innovation Hub in Batteries and Energy Storage, known as the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR). Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is a strategic partner in this project.
JCESR will build on and enhance Berkeley Lab’s 50-year legacy of scientific leadership in electrochemistry and electrochemical storage. The Lab already conducts major projects in the field of lithium-ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, sodium batteries, flow batteries and fuel cells.
Berkeley Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan will serve as the JCESR Deputy Director for Integration. Over the past three years, Dr. Srinivasan was instrumental in the conception and acquisition of the federal project.
A core motivation of the DOE energy innovation hubs is to integrate the continuum from fundamental research through to development and technology deployment. In this pursuit, Berkeley Lab will continue to seek and reinforce close interactions with industry.
