Berkeley Lab is developing new redox flow batteries for storing electricity generated from wind and solar farms. Also referred to as “regenerative fuel cells”, this class of batteries is ideally suited for storing large amounts of electricity (kWh to MWh) at much lower costs compared to lithium-ion batteries.
Berkeley Lab is working with industrial partners, including DuPont, Bosch, and 3M, to develop new chemistries that hold the promise to create the next generation, low-cost, sate, flow batteries with long life.
