Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is strongly committed to develop its relationships and collaborations with Industry. The recent announcements from DOE ARPA-E and Vehicle Technologies Office regarding new project awards are a testimony to this strategic endeavor.
An ARPA-E RANGE Project was awarded to a team led by GE to develop a new, low-cost, water-based flow battery for EVs. The Berkeley Lab (Dr. Adam Weber) contribution is to test the chemistry identified at GE and prove its viability in redox flow cell hardware.
The following projects are funded under the Vehicle Technologies Program:
The 3M Company leads a project aimed at developing a new, high-energy electrochemical couple for automotive applications that exceeds energy requirements for PEV applications by coupling high-capacity core-shell cathode, advanced electrolyte, and advanced stable silicon alloy composite anode with a novel conductive polymer binder. Berkeley Lab (Dr. Gao Liu) will design and prepare new polymer binders attuned to 3M silicon alloy anode materials.
Farasis Energy will develop high-energy density lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles based on novel, high-voltage manganese-rich cathode material coupled with a metal alloy composite anode and a high-voltage electrolyte. Berkeley Lab (Dr. Marca Doeff) will develop new high-energy metal-substituted NMC cathode materials.
